Selling Japan and Buying Gold Miners

Global expert Keith Fitz-Gerald, of the Money Map Report, is bearish on the Japanese yen and Japanese bonds, but bullish on the long-term prospects for the out-of-favor junior gold miners.

Steven Halpern: We're here today with Keith Fitz-Gerald, chief investment strategist of Money Map Report and the chairman of the Fitz-Gerald Group, which provides financial consulting services to governments and corporations. How are you doing Keith?

Keith Fitz-Gerald: I'm doing great. Thanks for having me today, Steven.

Steven Halpern: Keith, given that much of your time is spent in Japan, I'm always interested in your outlook on that market. What's your outlook for Japanese stocks?

Keith Fitz-Gerald: Well, I'll tell you. After a brief burst that is prompted by Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's commitment to his version of Ben Bernanke's bailout strategies, I'm growing less confident in their ability to execute a major overhaul of the Japanese economy. Unfortunately, it's not good at this particular moment.

Steven Halpern: Okay, now, also you are short the yen, as well as Japanese government bonds. You've taken that position through ETFs. Can you tell us a little about those positions?

Keith Fitz-Gerald: You bet. The argument is very, very simple and again, I do spend a lot of my time there, unlike a lot of analysts who simply are familiar with it from reading the headlines. I'm married to a Japanese and have spent 25 years living there, at least part-time, every single year.

We are short the yen for one simple reason. Japan has the highest debt load per GDP of any nation on the planet. They are so far out of whack, that if you add up public, private, and corporate debt, you're looking at almost 500% of GDP.

At the same time, they've got a very old population. They have a very low birth rate. They have no immigration policy to speak of. The workforce is declining at the same time the number of pensioners requiring support is increasing. What this means net-net is that ultimately, the yen is going to have to come down.

It's going to have to come into line with overseas capital markets and Abenomics is going to ensure that that happens. They need a weak yen. That's part one of what they call the three arrows.

We've simply taken the mind, that the best way to play that, is the Pro Shares Ultra Short Yen. So far, we are well into the double-digit returns. I think there's an awful lot of juice left in that trade.

Steven Halpern: For Japanese government bonds, what would you recommend?

Keith Fitz-Gerald: Japanese government bonds are very interesting. We use a Power Share Deutsche Bank Inverse Japanese Government Bond Futures. Boy, these things are a mouthful aren't they? The ticker is (JGBS) and what we're looking for here, really, is the same sort of phenomena we're looking for in the United States.

Eventually, by virtue of all this money that Abenomics is going to pump into the Japanese economy, inflation will ignite, the value of the currency will change and ultimately the value of bonds, this long bond run we've seen, will go the other direction. This is really a trade designed to help investors set that up.

Steven Halpern: Outside of the Japanese market, you recently said that Junior Gold Miners are about the most unloved, intensely disliked investments on the planet, but you've taken a contrarian view and believe that that pessimism is a reason to buy. Can you explain your position?

Keith Fitz-Gerald: Absolutely, you know that old joke as well as I do. Contrarians are great at picking tops and bottoms. The rest of the time, they're just wrong.

In reality here, I think we've seen something that the rest of the world simply hasn't seen. Every bubble, whether it's resource related or not, has to have an adjustment along the way. It's not uncommon for resources to correct 40%, 50%, even 60% and the Fed and other central banks remained trapped in gilded cages that they made for themselves.

To me, that speaks to the logical need to preserve value. When I see a stock or a collection of companies, in this case, Junior Gold Miners, that are intensely disliked, unloved, un-favored, that to me is an important indicator when you couple it with short interest that's been running at an all-time high that there's a change in the wind.

To quote legendary investor Jim Rogers, I just want to wait until somebody puts money down in the corner of the room, then walk over and pick it up. I think we're at that point in time.

Steven Halpern: You'd be taking a long-term view on the mining stocks, correct?

Keith Fitz-Gerald: Yes, that is correct. I don't like to do anything that is short-term if I can help it. I'm very much an advocate of moving with the markets, rather than against them. Timing is an exercise in futility. Even the very, very best traders have trouble doing it consistently, so I'd rather be an investor.

In that sense, I want to look for the motion in the ocean, the changing of the tides, rather than discrete specific waves, because those come and go all day long. Unless your timing is very good, you're going to miss them.

Steven Halpern: In terms of the Junior Miners, would you be recommending that individual investors look at the actual mining companies themselves, or would you prefer a more diversified investment in an ETF?

Keith Fitz-Gerald: Well, this is an interesting question, Steven. You could go for the discrete companies. The problem with that is that you really have to be able to sort the cash from the trash. It's very hard to do that unless you absolutely know what you're doing, spend an awful lot of time on site, and literally walk the dirt with the geological engineers.

I think the better way for 99% of all investors is something called the Market Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF and the ticker on that is (GDXJ). That is going to sweep in some questionable companies, but for the most part, it's going to grab a whole broad swath of the industry that I think is poised for a run.

Steven Halpern: Thank you for taking the time today and we look forward to talking again.

Keith Fitz-Gerald: It's my pleasure. Thanks for having me.

5 Disturbing Energy Blunders in 2013

Pipeline blaze in the Gulf. Photo credit: AP Photo/US Coast Guard, Petty Officer 3rd Class Carlos Vega.

So far, 2013 isn't shaping up to be the energy industry's safest year. A number of disasters have occurred, which have brought unwanted attention to the industry. Here's a look at the industry's five biggest blunders so far this year.

A Herculean disaster averted in the Gulf
Just this past week, a blowout occurred on a Hercules (NASDAQ: HERO  ) -owned rig operating in the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Natural gas leaking from a well off the coast of Louisiana caught fire and spread to the Hercules rig. Fortunately, all 48 personnel in the rig were safely evacuated. However, the incident underscores the risks of drilling offshore. It could have been a lot worse, as no one was hurt, and this is a natural gas well so the environmental threats are far less than if it were an oil well. While the well is not yet under control, Hercules investors appear to have caught a break, which is why stock was down only about 4% on the week.

The Gulf aflame, again
Earlier in the year, oil did catch fire in the Gulf after a Chevron (NYSE: CVX  ) -owned pipeline caught fire after being hit by a tugboat pushing an oil barge. Cleanup crews were quick to respond in deploying thousands of feet of containment booms and skimmers. However, the incident left a mile-long oil sheen in the Gulf, which isn't something any of us wanted to see in the Gulf again. Luckily, the incident didn't cause much harm or damage, though it did serve as a reminder of the risks we face in securing our energy future.

ExxonMobil's oily mess
Oil and gas giant ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM  ) had a pretty big mess on its hands when its 70-year-old Pegasus oil pipeline sprang a leak. In late March, the pipeline spilled about 5,000 barrels of crude oil, or about 210,000 gallons, in Mayflower, Ark. Luckily, that was just a fraction of the 90,000 barrels of crude oil that flow through the pipeline each day. The spill caused quite a stir against the transporting of crude oil by pipes, and it certainly didn't help the cause of the politically charged Keystone XL. Nor did it help that the pipeline sprang a small leak again about a month later. This time it spilled about one barrel of crude oil in a residential yard about 200 miles from the Mayflower spill.

Canada's national tragedy
Unfortunately, the year was marred by more than just close calls. Earlier this month, a runaway train loaded with oil derailed in a quaint lakeside town in Quebec. An ensuing explosion caused an estimated 1.5 million gallons of oil to catch fire, ultimately killing 47 people. Despite a previously stellar safety record, oil-by-rail has seen several spills this year, including three small spills earlier this year by Canadian Pacific (NYSE: CP  ) . Its largest accident resulted in a spill of 30,000 gallons of oil in Minnesota. However, those spills are really a drop in the bucket when compared with the devastating tragedy in Canada, which is by far the worst oil-by-rail disaster since the industry started relying on the rails because of a lack of pipeline capacity.

The wrong chemical equation
The extraction and transportation of natural gas and oil wasn't the only part of the energy industry to endure a tragic incident. This past April, a fertilizer plant explosion in the town of West, Texas, caught fire and exploded, killing at least 14 while injuring more than 200. The fallout from the incident has the town suing the plant's supplier, CF Industries (NYSE: CF  ) . The suit says that CF "blindly" supplied about 200 tons of a volatile compound to the West Fertilizer Company without investigating whether the plant could store it safely. The wooden warehouse that stored the ammonium nitrate didn't have fire-resistant partitions or a sprinkler system. Further, it was stored in combustible wooden bins with significant amounts of combustible seeds, which is what helped fuel the intensity of the fire.

Final Foolish thoughts
There's no way to sugar-coat this: 2013 has been a terrible year for the energy industry as well as sectors closely associated with it. The loss of human life is especially heartbreaking, as several of these disasters will leave a lasting impact. However, we must push forward for a brighter tomorrow and work together to ensure better safeguards are in place so incidents like these don't ever happen again.

The hope is that these big blunders will bring about more prudent management of our resources but won't derail our goal of becoming energy independent. It really is an exciting time in our nation's history, and there are many different ways to invest in the growth of the energy sector. If you're looking at how you can invest in the sector without exposing your retirement portfolio to a lot of risk, then you should consider a company that The Motley Fool's analysts have uncovered as its an under-the-radar company that's dominating its industry. Investors Put Faith in Wendy's

If you were interested in a high-flying company, you might not be interested in one that was posting 0.4% comparable sales growth. That's pretty low when you consider that companies such as Starbucks can put up 8% comparable sales growth.

Welcome to the world of Wendy's (NASDAQ: WEN  ) . The burger chain announced preliminary second-quarter results earlier this week, and investors ate them up. The stock has risen 30% in 2013, handily beating out the S&P 500. The company is sitting on about three times as much long-term debt as it has cash, and sales are sluggish. So what gives?

A little goes a long way
When Wendy's beat expectations, it did so by earning $0.08 per share when the market was expecting $0.06. The company managed to generate a lot of excitement with that result, because it's seen as the very beginning of a turnaround. An analyst from Barclays said of the turnaround, "traction is finally building."

What's been building for so long is the change from burger chain to slightly nicer burger chain. While that may seem like a small thing, Wendy's has put a lot into the business to make it happen. The company is planning to redo many of its corporate locations to give them a fresher feel. It also wants to change up the menu offerings, effectively moving itself closer to the fast-casual side of the scale.

The challenge for the company is how to walk the line. It still wants to be a fast-food place, but it wants to offer items to people looking for a slightly more upscale dining experience. That means introducing things like the Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger to entice -- sort of -- picky diners.

Walking a thin line
The difficulty that Wendy's has had, and will continue to have, I think, is that it's very hard to be all things to all people. The idea of being the better burger chain means that Wendy's is going to be competing not only with McDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) and Burger King, but also Five Guys and In-and-Out Burger.

If Wendy's can do it right, that could be a great move. McDonald's reported underwhelming earnings earlier in the week, and the company blamed much of the softness on larger economic issues. The fact that the market is now seemingly saturated with similar chains means that Wendy's could break out of the pack and make for the blue waters of high-end burger heaven. Five Guys, for instance, is thought to be the fastest growing fast-food joint in the US, with sales approaching $1 billion annually. That's a place where Wendy's could get comfortable.

The difficult road ahead
But it might not work. Wendy's has been laboring under its "Image Activation" plan since 2011, and the business hasn't really expanded by leaps and bounds. In its most recent announcement, Wendy's also announced that it's going to sell off about 425 locations, putting them in the hands of franchise operators. That, at least, seems like a straightforwardly great move. The extra cash will give the company more to work with, and the stability of franchise income makes investors happy.

The only question now is, "Is it worth it?" The stock is trading at a heavy premium because of its "imminent" turnaround. I'm not tempted. There are other businesses -- Starbucks and Panera Bread come to mind -- that are doing very well, cost less, and seem like a smaller risk. For now, I'm sticking with well-defined businesses. Maybe in three years, Wendy's will be something other than a company in transition, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Whatever You Do, Don't Sell Facebook Now

How does a company worth $60 billion manage to completely shock investors and deliver a 25% one-day gain? That's the question being asked at traders' desks across the country after Facebook delivered a rock-solid second quarter that exceeded the most bullish of forecasts.

The answer is simple. Facebook, despite its massive size, had largely been forgotten by most investors. Earlier this month, I noted how this once-hot IPO had been steadily falling this past spring, even as the rest of the market was in party mode.

Suddenly, this stock is touching 52-week highs again, and if you were savvy enough to own this stock going into the quarter, then this is no time to be a seller. After a quick move to $33, this stock may be headed toward the $40 mark by year's end.

The Great Second Quarter
Facebook's impressive second-quarter results have been discussed in many other forums, so I'll only recap the key metrics here:

Strong advertising revenue (up 63% from a year ago (excluding currency impacts) compared with a 41% year-over-year jump in this year's first quarter) highlights the company's rapidly increasing ability to monetize its massive user base. That monetization, which surged 26% from a year ago to $1.60 per user, is now the highest in the social media landscape. That figure stood at $1.35 just three months ago. Facebook's daily average users, as a percentage of monthly active users, rose to 61% in the second quarter from the previous quarter, reversing recent declines. That rebuts concerns that consumers have grown tired of daily Facebooking. Mobile ad revenues of $657 million were almost 50% above consensus forecasts. The entire analyst community simply didn't see this coming. Facebook generated more than $1 billion in quarterly EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) for the first time in its history. The most bullish Wall Street analysts expected EBITDA of around $900 million.

Yet as solid as those numbers are, they don't explain why this stock still has considerable upside. In my recommendation of Facebook earlier this month, I discussed the management initiatives that are still in their infancy and not yet significantly contributing to financial results. For example, the company's purchase of Instagram -- which now has more than 130 million active users -- continues to look like a master stroke, as that division's user growth shows no signs of cooling.

Facebook management has moved slowly to monetize Instagram's user base, wisely preferring to let it grow as large as possible before shifting the platform toward ads. It's a transition that Facebook users now accept, and Instagram users will slowly be weaned into advertising in a similar fashion.

Another growth initiative to monitor: video advertising. Facebook concedes that advertisers are clamoring for more video display ad opportunities and this is likely to be a key focus for management over the next six months. (In the third point I made in my look at the stock a few weeks ago, I also highlighted many other mini-platforms that Facebook is developing.)

The other key trend is very impressive capital management. Facebook's IT team is becoming so much more adept in its hardware and software purchasing that the company was able to pursue all of its growth initiatives with just $268 million in capital spending. That's more than $100 million below consensus forecasts.

After a rocky start, Facebook's stock is now touching 52-week highs, and may be headed toward the $40 mark by year's end.

Surging revenues and controlled expenses will set the stage for Facebook to post some of the most impressive operating margin profiles of any major tech company. Merrill Lynch believes that free cash flow will exceed $2.5 billion by 2015, up from just $53 million last year. Projected EBITDA of $7.4 billion in 2015 would be roughly triple the EBITDA generated in 2012.

Top Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Wall Street Sees The Light
Wall Street analysts, who tend to move as a herd, have been suddenly boosting target prices at a feverish clip. Here's a quick sampling:

Merrill Lynch's target goes from $35 to $40, boosting 2014 and 2015 forward EPS and revenue targets by 20% to 40%. UBS' price target was raised from $30 to $36, suggesting that "there will be upward pressure on advertiser budgets allocated to Facebook as the company improves its ability to demonstrate the (returns on investment) achievable on its platform." Topeka Capital Markets sees shares rising to $40, thanks to "several well defined catalysts over the next two years including monetizing Instagram, launch of auto-play video ads ... and a bigger push into e-commerce." Jefferies' target price goes from $32 to $37, predicting that Facebook will finish the year on a very strong note as current initiatives ripen. JMP Securities upgraded its rating from "market perform" to "market outperform." Its new $38 price target is based on the belief that "Facebook has discovered the formula to begin significantly extracting value from its 1.16 billion global users." Cantor Fitzgerald bumped its price target from $35 to $40, as "the valuation remains compelling for a company growing revenues at 40-plus percent and EBITDA margins at 55-plus percent." J.P. Morgan has a Street-high $44 price target, suggesting that the just-released second-quarter results "could be thesis-changing for many."

Why should you care about these analysts' price target and views? Because Facebook is about to become a major topic of conversation among these analysts and their hedge fund clients. Analysts tend to "talk up a name" as long as its current price is a reasonable distance from its target price.

Risks to Consider: There are a few negatives to the Facebook story. First, the games category continues to underwhelm and is becoming a decreasing part of the sales mix. Second, Facebook's "Graph Search" feature, which was the product of a considerable amount of R&D spending, has not yet become a hit with consumers. And thanks to a rebounding stock price, Facebook could soon be hit by a brain drain as valuable employees cash in their stock options and migrate to smaller, pre-public tech companies where other options bounties await.

Action to Take --> Shares of Facebook are hitting fresh 52-week highs but remain well below the IPO price. The company burned a lot of bridges with lackluster quarterly results in 2012. Yet it's increasingly clear that management now understands the need to deliver solid financial metrics both now and in the future. That said, it's the probable growth in 2014 and 2015 that should really have you focused on this stock. This week's sharp run for the stock reflects the fresh set of quarterly results -- but the next leg of share price appreciation will come from even better quarters yet to come.

P.S. -- The Street may have missed the boat on Facebook's strong second quarter, but StreetAuthority's predictions have guided investors to 89%... 92%... 293%... and even 310% gains in a year. Top 10 Penny Stocks To Watch Right Now

The last time General Electric (NYSE: GE  ) reported earnings, the news spooked investors enough to spark a 4% sell-off in GE stock. But investors had a different reaction entirely to GE earnings on Friday: They bid the stock up 4% (and even a bit more). So the news must have been good, right?

Well, yes and no.

Viewed in isolation, GE earnings Friday were no great shakes. Industrial cash flow from operating activities was $1.55 billion for the quarter, down 10% from last year, while total cash from operations was off by 46%. Q2 profits from continuing operations came in at $0.31 per diluted share on $35.1 billion in revenues. Those numbers were down 9%, and 4%, respectively, from last year's second quarter.

Today versus tomorrow
On the other hand, GE earnings did beat analyst estimates (by a penny). More importantly to investors, the company is showing signs of improved health that bode well for the future.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Brian Stoffel]

Rising Star Jim Mueller has built his portfolio around companies with stock prices that show the market's unreasonable distaste for them.

Sometimes it takes awhile for his bets to pay off, but when they do, he's handsomely rewarded. Just consider his double-dipping buys of Dendreon (Nasdaq: DNDN  ) , a pharmaceutical company that's recently seen its fortunes improve on the basis of its prostate drug Provenge. Though the stock didn't do too much for Jim in 2011, it's up 94% for him in 2012!

He thinks the same could happen with GameStop, a company that analysts have written off as a dying bricks-and-mortar retailer. But Jim says the company is refusing to die, taking three solid steps to solidify its future.

  • GameStop's PowerUp Rewards program is catching on with customers, growing from 4.5 million members to 15.5 million in just a year's time.
  • The company is strengthening its digital business with Impulse (a downloading site), Kongregate (a casual gaming site), and Spawn Labs (a cloud gaming subsidiary).
  • It is working with content providers and console providers to strengthen these digital channels.

Advisors' Opinion:

Anyone worried that Howard Stern is coarsening American culture should find comfort in the ratings of two television channels operated by Crown Media (CRWN).

Don't know the name? Think the Hallmark Channel, which ranked 16th during the day and 18th for prime-time viewership last year, among 78 ad-supported cable channels. Or the Hallmark Movie Channel, with an impressive 40 million subscribers, twice as many as Stern's radio company.

Hallmark channels feature squeaky-clean TV series like "Little House on the Prairie" and "Touched by an Angel," movies like "The Five People You Meet in Heaven"  and original movies like "A Family Thanksgiving." They also rerun "Hallmark Hall of Fame" programs developed for network broadcast, like "The Magic of Ordinary Days" and "Plainsong."

Programs like these may not be everyone's cup of tea, but advertisers love the demographic they deliver: women ages 24 to 59.

Ratings did slip slightly last year, one reason the stock has not been a great performer. But it was a year of transition for Crown, which introduced a new "lifestyle" block of programming during the daytime at the Hallmark Channel. The new lineup boasts "The Martha Stewart Show," among other programs.

Viewers took a while to warm up, but a holiday-season ratings romp shows Crown has not lost its touch. The Hallmark Channel was the top destination for prime time on Saturday nights during the holiday season, and its programming posted ratings gains of 40% to 80% in its target demographic. December ratings at the Hallmark Movie Channel were up 70%, compared with the rest of the quarter. As a result, Crown saw revenue jump 17% in the quarter.

One risk here is that Crown loses the "Hallmark" brand it licenses from Hallmark Cards -- but that's unlikely, because the card company owns most of the stock.

As China’s economy grows, the Chinese middle class has taken flight — literally. Providing the travel arrangements for this newfound class of Chinese travelers is Universal Travel Group (UTA).

The company provides domestic and international airline ticketing services, along with cargo transportation agency services. But it’s not just flights that UTA helps citizens book. The company also provides hotel reservations, tour planning, ground transportation, railway and express delivery and air delivery services.

UTA is the travel agency in China, and considering the shares have booked a 190% gain over the past 12 months, it certainly seems like the sky is the limit for UTA.

I rate UTA an A, making it a strong buy.

Best Casino Stocks To Watch For 2014: MGM Resorts International(MGM)

MGM Resorts International, through its subsidiaries, primarily owns and operates casino resorts in the United States. The company?s resorts offer gaming, hotel, dining, entertainment, retail, and other resort amenities. It also owns and operates golf courses and a golf club. As of December 31, 2010, the company owned and operated 15 properties located in Nevada, Mississippi, and Michigan; and has 50% investments in 4 other casino resorts in Nevada, Illinois, and Macau. In addition, MGM Resorts International has an agreement with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, which owns and operates a casino resort in Connecticut, to carry the ?MGM Grand? brand name. The company was formerly known as MGM MIRAGE and changed its name to MGM Resorts International in June 2010. MGM Resorts International was founded in 1986 and is based in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Hawkinvest]

MGM Resorts International (MGM) is one of the world's largest hotel and casino companies, based in Las Vegas. Since December, MGM shares have been trading in a range of about $9, to almost $15 per share. The stock is now at the upper limit of the recent trading range which means that the risk of holding or buying this stock right now, could be elevated. MGM shares have rallied with the markets but appear extended and vulnerable to a sell-off. The company has a heavy debt load and it has been reporting losses. The balance sheet has about $13.45 billion in debt and only about $1.97 billion in cash. MGM could be impacted by higher oil prices because many consumers could cut back on spending if they go to Las Vegas, and some might decide not to go at all, and instead opt for a "staycation." With MGM facing challenges and the shares near recent highs, it could make sen se to sell now and buy on dips later this year.

Here are some key points for MGM:

    Current share price: $14.18

The 52 week range is $7.40 to $16.05

Earnings estimates for 2011: a loss of 53 cents per share

Earnings estimates for 2012: a loss of 39 cents per share

    Annual dividend: none

  • [By Goodwin]

MGM Resorts International(MGM) has the most exposure to the Las Vegas market, making it a bet only for those with thick skin.

For the second quarter, the casino operator lost $883.5 million, or $2 a share, compared with a loss of $212.5 million, or 60 cents, in the year-ago period.

A majority of the loss was attributed to a $1.12 billion writedown on its investment in CityCenter in Las Vegas. This is the third time MGM has had to write down CityCenter, as the casino has seen little improvement in operating profit since it opened in December. The $8.5 billion development took a loss of $128 million.

Excluding this writedown, MGM actually lost 35 cents a share, still significantly more than analysts estimates of a 24-cent loss. MGM's revenue rose 3% to $1.54 billion from $1.49 billion, ahead of analysts' estimates of $1.46 billion.

Revenue-per-available room on the Las Vegas Strip decreased 2%, although Bellagio and MGM Grand showed improvement, the company said. Occupancy levels slipped to 93% from 94% while the average daily rate fell a dollar to $110. "The Las Vegas operating environment remains difficult, but as we expected, we are seeing a gradual recovery," Chief Executive Officer Jim Murren said in a statement.

Some of MGM's losses in Las Vegas were offset by its joint venture in Macau with Pansy Ho. MGM Macau earned $40 million, compared with a loss of $8 million last year

Outside of Vegas, MGM said last week that it agreed to sell land from its Borgata hotel in Atlantic City for $73 million to Vornado Realty Trust and Geyser Holdings. The Borgata land, which is co-owned with Boyd Gaming(BYD), is about 11.3 acres, which would translate into about $6.5 million per acre.

The transaction still needs to be approved by New Jersey regulators, and is expected to close by the fourth quarter. Once this transaction is complete, MGM will still own about 85 acres of developable land in Atlantic City.

Earlier in the year, MGM said it planned t! o divest its 50% stake in the Atlantic City casino, which is currently in trust. The casino operator is still in talks with potential buyers of Borgata casino, and hotel and investors will be waiting for an update on its progress when second-quarter earnings are released.

"We view this [deal] as a very modest positive in that there are still buyers of Atlantic City assets out there, at least at the right price," J.P. Morgan analyst Joseph Greff wrote in a note. "We don't necessarily interpret [the] news as any indication that MGM is closer to selling its 50% stake in Borgata."

Best Casino Stocks To Watch For 2014: Pinnacle Entertainment Inc.(PNK)

Pinnacle Entertainment, Inc. owns, develops, and operates casinos, and related hospitality and entertainment facilities in the United States. It operates casinos, such as L'Auberge du Lac in Lake Charles, Louisiana; River City Casino and Lumiere Place in St. Louis, Missouri; Boomtown New Orleans in New Orleans, Louisiana; Belterra Casino Resort in Vevay, Indiana; Boomtown Bossier City in Bossier City, Louisiana; and Boomtown Reno in Reno, Nevada. The company also operates River Downs racetrack in southeast Cincinnati, Ohio. As of May 26, 2011, it operated seven casinos and one racetrack. The company was formerly known as Hollywood Park, Inc. and changed its name to Pinnacle Entertainment, Inc. in February 2000. Pinnacle Entertainment, Inc. was founded in 1935 and is based in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jeanine Poggi]

Pinnacle Entertainment(PNK) was the great transition story of 2010, with shares spiking about 45% this year.

The regional casino operator's most impressive story has been in its gross margins, as management, under the leadership of new CEO Anthony Sanfilippo, is in the process of increasing the company's operating efficiencies and prudently allocating capital. Analysts believe Pinnacle is in the early stages of this process, and will continue to drive revenue growth.

In its third quarter, Pinnacle reported a surprise profit of 10 cents a share on an adjusted basis, better than consensus estimates of a loss of 7 cents. Revenue grew 15% to $287.8 million, while property-level margins reached 23.4%, also ahead of forecasts.

Last month, Pinnacle purchased Cincinnati's River Downs Racetrack for $45 million. The deal includes 155 acres, 35 of which are still undeveloped. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the first quarter of 2011.

This deal could generate significant returns in the event that Ohio decides to legalize video lottery terminals at racetracks, Santarelli said.

Pinnacle is also in the process of looking for a buyer of its oceanfront land in Atlantic City, where it originally intended to build a $1.5 billion casino, before squelching plans. The casino operator bought the land in 2006 for $270 million from groups affiliated with Carl Icahn and later added another piece of land for $70 million.

While the land's currently value is $38 million, Pinnacle insists it will not sell it on the cheap, holding out for the best deal.

Pinnacle currently has $228 million in cash and $375 million of availability under its revolver.

  • [By Sherry Jim]

Pinnacle Entertainment(PNK) swung to a loss in its second quarter, as costs rose.

During the quarter, the regional casino operator lost $49.3 million, or 81 cents a share, compared with a profit of $4.7 million, or 8 cents, in the year-ago period for Pinnacle.

Excluding items, Pinnacle actually lost 14 cents a share, 10 cents worse than analysts' estimates of a 4-cent loss.

Pinnacle's revenue rose 8.5% to $273.6 million from $252.3 million, but also fell short of Wall Street's forecast of $284.4 million.

Even though revenue was weaker, margins rebounded at all but one of Pinnacle's properties. "Margins are the story for Pinnacle ahead of any longer-term potential true rebound in the economy, and we continue to believe there are multiple opportunities for near-term operational improvements across the Pinnacle portfolio," Bain wrote in a note.

At a time when most casino operators are striving to reduce costs to offset the decline in consumer spending, Pinnacle saw expenses rise 21% to $289.3 million. But Bain said Pinnacle is still in the early stages of cost-refining. "Given what we view as several areas of potential improvements in this regard, we believe Pinnacle is less dependent on an economic recovery than some of its regional peers," he wrote.

J.P. Morgan analyst Joseph Greff also reaffirms his overweight rating on the stock, viewing Pinnacle as a transition story. "We continue to believe that new CEO Anthony Sanfilippo and team will drive increased operating efficiencies and allocate capital prudently," he wrote in a note.

Greff praises Sanfilippo for shelving the Sugarcane Bay project and instead focusing on Baton Rouge.

Pinnacle's liquidity remains strong, with $200 million in cash and $375 million of availability under its revolver

10 Best Stocks To Buy For 2014: Penn National Gaming Inc.(PENN)

Penn National Gaming, Inc. and its subsidiaries own and manage gaming and pari-mutuel properties in the United States. It operates approximately 27,000 gaming machines; 500 table games; and 2,000 hotel rooms in 23 facilities in 16 jurisdictions, including Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ontario. The company was formerly known as PNRC Corp. and changed its name to Penn National Gaming, Inc. in 1994. Penn National Gaming, Inc. was founded in 1982 and is based in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Quickel]

Penn National Gaming(PENN) squeaked past its guidance through improved cost controls, and investors praised its efforts.

But expectations were low, and its upbeat outlook shouldn't be viewed as a message that regional markets are recovering. "Going forward, we project soft regional gaming revenue results over the next three to six months, as we do not expect to see a significant increase in consumer spending patterns given the uncertain economic environment," J.P. Morgan analyst Joseph Greff wrote in a note.

Penn National raised its full-year earnings guidance to $1.18 from $1.13 a share, and up its revenue outlook by $26 million to $2.44 billion from $2.41 billion.

During the second quarter, the company earned $9.2 million, or 9 cents a share, compared with $28.5 million, or 27 cents, in the year-ago period. Excluding items, Penn actually earned 29 cents a share, a penny higher than estimates.

Revenue rose 3% to $598.3 million, higher than the $597.1 million Wall Street projected. The upside was driven by both better revenues and margins and was generally broad-based across many properties, especially larger venues in Charlestown, Lawrenceburg and Grantville, Pa.

Penn National rolled out table games in West Virginia and Pennsylvania during the quarter, which should be a growth catalyst moving forward. The company also plans to open a slot facility in Maryland on Sept. 30 and expects its Toldeo, Ohio, location to open in the first-half of 2012. Its Columbus project is slated to open in the second-half of 2012.

The company repurchased 409,000 shares during the quarter. "[This] sends a message to investors on the value of its equity, but perhaps indicating the lack of near-term acquisition opportunities," J.P. Morgan analyst Joseph Greff wrote in a note.

The company was founded in 2002 and is based in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Carlson]

Wynn Resorts(WYNN) saw its second-quarter profit more than double, but most of that strength came from casino wins, and investors were unimpressed.

During the quarter, the casino operator earned $52. 4 million, or 52 cents a share, on revenue of $1.03 billion, higher than forecasts of 42 cents on revenue of $992.3 million. This compares with a profit of $25.5 million, or 21 cents, on revenue of $723.3 million, in the year-ago period.

Wynn had already pre-announced disappointing results for its Las Vegas properties, citing higher costs, including employee health care and benefits, and marketing expenses. Its operating loss for its Wynn Las Vegas and Encore widened to $17.2 million from $8.3 million last year. Revenue rose 1.7% to $318 million.

Occupancy at the Wynn Las Vegas jumped to 92.6% from 86.6% a year earlier, but revenue per available room fell 3.2%.

Still, management indicated that there is a slight improvement on the Strip, with an increase in forward group bookings and some bright spots for the ability to yield rates. But management tempered enthusiasm by saying there are some struggles and uncertainty in the marketplace.

"We hope for continued improvement in Las Vegas or -- let me put it different, we hope that we'll get smarter in Las Vegas in dealing with the peculiarities of this market --and this very, very mercurial, national economic market we're living with," said Steve Wynn, chief executive, in a conference call. "The national economy and the political environment in the country as we head up to the elections [is] very, very touchy. And it is impacting all businesses."

The biggest boost, of course, came from Macau, where revenue surged 74% to $714.4 million from $410.4 million last year.

The company opened its Encore Macau in the spring, boosting its market share to about 16% from about 13%, Sterne Agee analyst David Bain wrote in a note.

Wynn is in the process of working on a new development on the Cotai st! rip, which should spike investors' interest as more details are revealed in the coming quarters.

Still, investors are concerned that as comparisons get harder in Macau, and second-quarter results are adjusted for hold (how much the casino won), Wynn may not be able to outperform. But Bain reassures, "this has been discussed as nauseam by investors, sell-side analysts, the press -- and even dinner-table relatives -- for some time. We believe the Street is underestimating the summer months in Macua, which may help to produce a new leg up for Macau stories, with Wynn being the most profitable on a per position basis."

  • [By Jeanine Poggi]

Wynn Resorts'(WYNN) run up of more than 55% this year has caused Wall Street to question its valuation.

Currently, eight analysts have a buy rating on Wynn, 16 say hold, two rate it underperform rating and one says to sell the stock.

"With little on the growth horizon in the intermediate term, new competition from Cotai coming in 2011 and 2012 ... and the unclear timing of a true recovery in Las Vegas, we see few catalysts not yet priced-in to pull valuation higher than current levels," Bain wrote in a note following its third-quarter earnings report.

During the quarter, Wynn lost $33.5 million, or 27 cents a share, compared with a profit of $34.2 million, or 28 cents, in the year-ago period. The loss was attributed to charges related to servicing its debt. On an adjusted basis, Wynn actually earned 39 cents, matching Wall Street's outlook.

Total Revenue grew to $1 billion from $773.1 million, better than the $990.8 million analysts predicted.

In Macau, Wynn reported a 50% surge in revenue to $671.4 million, while EBITDA was $198 million, up 54.5% from $128.2 million in the third quarter of 2009. Earlier in the year the company opened its $600 million Wynn Encore Macau, which added 414 rooms to the market.

Looking ahead, Wynn expects to break ground on its Cotai development in early 2011. The $2 billion to $3 billion project is slated to open in 2015, and management said it would provide additional details following its fourth-quarter earnings report.

In Las Vegas, CEO Steve Wynn says the Strip is on the road to recovery. "I believe we have seen the bottom in Las Vegas," he said during the company's third-quarter conference call. "I don't know how fast it is going to get better but it isn't going to get any worse."

Las Vegas revenue inched up 3.1% to $334.5 million during the three-month period, and EBITDA grew 9.3% to $76.5 million.

Wynn also issued a cash dividend of $8 a share payable on Dec. 7 to sharehold! ers of record on Nov. 23.

The Travelers Companies Inc. (NYSE: TRV) is expected to rise by only 7.6% to $77.26 in 2013. That would represent a 52-week high but this one also has a yield of 2.6%. We would note that the street high target is actually all the way up at $87.00 and shares are currently very close to all-time highs. This insurance provider and financial services giant is not tied into healthcare so it has been immune to some of the ongoing risks. Travelers held up rather well in the recession but many investors do not even know it i one of the 30 DJIA components.
